Movers Brent Health and Safety Policy
Movers Brent is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. We recognise that professional moving and handling activities involve specific health and safety risks, and we aim to manage these risks responsibly and proactively.
Policy Statement
The objective of this Health and Safety Policy is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our operations. We will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards, and we will strive for continual improvement in our health and safety performance.
Health and safety is a core part of how Movers Brent plans and delivers all moving and relocation services, including domestic removals, office moves, packing, loading, transport and unloading.
Responsibilities
The management of Movers Brent has overall responsibility for ensuring that this policy is implemented and maintained. Management will provide the leadership, resources and arrangements necessary to achieve high standards of health and safety.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for:
Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out, reviewed and communicated.
Providing and maintaining safe equipment, vehicles and work systems.
Organising appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision.
Monitoring working practices and addressing unsafe behaviour promptly.
All employees, including temporary and agency staff, are responsible for:
Taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others.
Following safety instructions, training and company procedures.
Using equipment, tools and personal protective equipment correctly.
Reporting hazards, accidents, incidents and near misses without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Movers Brent will identify and evaluate risks associated with our moving, lifting, driving and storage activities. Risk assessments will be completed for key tasks such as manual handling, working in confined spaces, operating lifting equipment, driving and parking vehicles, and working at customer premises.
Findings from risk assessments will be used to develop safe systems of work. These safe systems will be communicated to employees through training, work instructions and supervision. They will be reviewed regularly and updated where necessary, for example when new equipment or methods are introduced.
Manual Handling and Lifting Operations
Manual handling is a significant element of removals work. Movers Brent will take all reasonably practicable steps to reduce the risk of injury from lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling loads.
Key controls include:
Assessing loads for weight, size, shape and stability before moving.
Using mechanical aids such as trolleys, dollies and lifting equipment where appropriate.
Allocating sufficient staff to handle heavy or awkward items.
Providing manual handling training focused on safe lifting techniques and team handling.
Avoiding unnecessary carrying by planning routes and vehicle loading carefully.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Movers Brent will ensure that vehicles used for removals and related services are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition. Pre-use vehicle checks will be carried out and defects reported promptly for remedial action.
Drivers will be required to follow safe driving practices, including adherence to speed limits, safe loading and securing of items, use of seatbelts and observance of rest breaks. Routes and schedules will be planned to minimise risks associated with fatigue, congestion and unsuitable access roads where reasonably possible.
Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment
All equipment and tools supplied by Movers Brent will be suitable for their intended purpose and maintained in a safe condition. Regular inspections will be carried out and defective equipment will be removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided, such as safety footwear, gloves, hi-visibility clothing or other protective items relevant to the task. Employees must use and look after this equipment in accordance with training and instructions.
Working at Customer Premises
Our staff often work in homes, offices and other premises that we do not control. On arrival, staff will assess the working environment and identify hazards such as uneven surfaces, narrow staircases, poor lighting, restricted access, weather conditions and any other issues that may affect safe moving operations.
Where necessary, work will be adapted or temporarily stopped until additional control measures are in place. This may include adjusting the route, using extra staff, rescheduling work or using different equipment.
Information, Training and Supervision
Movers Brent will provide sufficient information, instruction and training to enable employees to work safely and competently. This includes induction training, task-specific instruction, refresher training and toolbox talks.
Training will cover, as appropriate, manual handling, vehicle and driving safety, use of lifting equipment, correct use of personal protective equipment, incident reporting and emergency procedures. Supervisors will monitor working practices and provide additional guidance where needed.
Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting
All accidents, incidents and near misses connected with our work must be reported promptly to management. This allows us to investigate, identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Records of incidents will be maintained and reviewed regularly to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Where required by law, incidents will be reported to the relevant enforcing authorities.
Health, Welfare and Wellbeing
Movers Brent recognises the importance of general health, welfare and wellbeing, especially in a physically demanding service such as removals. We will encourage safe working practices that minimise strain, fatigue and stress, and we will consider individual capabilities when allocating tasks.
Suitable welfare arrangements will be provided as far as reasonably practicable, including access to rest breaks, drinking water and sanitary facilities during the working day.
Consultation and Communication
We will consult with employees on health and safety matters and encourage open communication about hazards and improvements. Employees are invited to raise safety concerns or suggestions with their supervisor or management at any time.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be monitored for effectiveness through workplace inspections, incident investigations, audits and feedback from staff and customers. It will be formally reviewed at regular intervals and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment or applicable legislation.
Movers Brent is committed to continually improving our health and safety performance as an integral part of delivering reliable, professional removal services in our operating areas.
